Pantry vs. Recipe: A deliciously simple approach to career decisions

My friends and clients know I love a good analogy, and this one is a trusted favourite because it just makes so much sense!

You can approach decisions around career changes the same way you’d make decisions around what to have for dinner.

Seriously.

Let me explain.

It’s a simple case of pantry versus recipe.

PANTRY…. I’m not quite sure what I fancy. What ingredients do I currently have in the pantry (and fridge), and what could I make for dinner with these? Are any of the available options appealing enough to satisfy me, or am I going to be left craving? Am I going to enjoy my dinner or be left wondering what else could have been?

RECIPE…. I know what I really want for dinner, but I don’t have all the ingredients. Some of them I could probably pop next door to the IGA and grab, while others require a trip to a specialist grocer. Do I want this meal enough to make the effort and spend the money, and take the chance I mess it up or don’t like it?

The pantry is the job hunt. The obvious. The neat trajectory.

The recipe is the career change. The possibilities. The non-linear career.

Each has its benefits, each has its risks.

Bon appetit ma chérie!
